Have you always wanted to learn to knit, sew, quilt or even decorate a cake yet have no time to schlepp across town to take a class with an instructor with questionable credentials? Yep, me too. So I was so excited to discover Craftsy, the masters of online crafting classes. I especially like the fact that I can take free introductory courses on my schedule to see if I have the discipline to excel in any one particular craft. Do I have the patience for making fondant frills or am I better off sticking with flaky croisants? My best friend, Mariaelana and I were wandering around Encinitas last week when we happened upon a beading store. ME immediately tried to convince me to sign up and take a class. My response – no way. No way was I committing to travel 30 minutes every week at a specified time to take a class in a cluttered, unattractive, uncomfortable space. But today I called her – how about if we compromise and take a beading class on Craftsy. We can take the class together in the comfort of her living room or even on my porch. We can schedule it as the mood hits and best yet, as ME quickly surpasses me in attaining the beading skills, I can go back and watch the class as many times as I want. No I am not competitive — haha.

The details

Craftsy’s online crafting classes are taught by world renowned instructors who love the craft as much as you do. Craftsy classes are online, so they are available to you anytime you want for as long as you want, There is no scheduled class times, so you can enjoy them entirely on your own schedule. Each class is taught by an acclaimed instructor and consists of several hours of HD-quality video content… but Craftsy classes are much more than just a video! (Plus you will not experience the streaming problems I always have with YouTube videos – I never seem to get to the end of any “how to” video.

While taking a Craftsy class, you can:

  • Ask your instructor questions, upload photos, and get personalized responses
  • Participate in discussions with your classmates
  • Access supporting class materials – including patterns and helpful tips & tricks
  • Bookmark your favorite moments in the video so that you can easily re-watch them and take notes that you can refer back to anytime.

When and where do the classes take place?

Craftsy classes are taught completely online, accessible from any computer or mobile device connected to the internet. They are available to you anytime you want, for as long as you want. Craftsy classes have no scheduled class times, so you can enjoy them entirely on your own schedule. Your access never expires.

I also like that I can buy all my class supplies directly onsite including yarn, books and notions, and fabric at significant savings compared to me wandering into our local Joann’s and trying to figure my crafting needs without guidance.  I have a horrible habit of buying way, way more than I need for any one project.

Finally, although I would love to take a class with ME, I can definitely see myself sitting side by side this summer with the kids, first choosing and then taking a course from the Craftsy Kids Course Gallery.  What a wonderful, productive use of summer’s unstructured hours. Cross generational learning / crafting is a gift that I hope will be passed down from generation to generation.

The bottom line

Dare to be Great – Sign up for a Craftsy class today!
